Factor XIII levels only need to be elevated slightly to prevent or stop the bleeding symptoms associated with the disorder. Factor XIII concentrate, which is a blood product that contains a concentrated form of factor XIII, is used to treat individuals with factor XIII deficiency. People who have inherited factor XIII deficiency can be treated with Corifact®, a factor XIII concentrate. This medication is infused (injected into a vein), usually every three to four weeks. Some patients with factor XIII deficiency can also be treated with a medication called Tretten®, which is also infused. The body produces less factor XIII than it should, or the factor XIII is not working properly, therefore the clotting reaction is blocked prematurely and the blood clot does not form.
