Wolfgang Iser is well known for his reader-response criticism in literary theory, and together with Hans Robert Jauss, he is the founder of the Constance School of reception aesthetics in Germany. This book is written in his later years as Professor of English and Comparative Literature at the University of California. After the success of The Implied Reader in 1972, Wolfgang Iser determined to redirect his efforts from a critical analysis of selected novels to a theoretical critique of the reading process in The Act of Reading (1974).
